Problems in jakarta
As many other cities do, Jakarta has many urban problems.
One problem that has caused the loss of life in Jakarta is floods. Jakarta is
very prone to floods and they can prove to be very dangerous in the city.
Jakarta usually gets flooded every year, but the magnitude is not always that
big. In 2007 though, flooding affected 70% of Jakarta, killed 57 people and
made at least 450,000 people homeless.
There are big overcrowding issues in Jakarta at the moment. As there are 10.2 million people currently living in Jakarta, it means that thousands of people can be driving on the city roads at once. This can lead to big traffic jams and congestion of vehicles on the roads. This is a problem because it means that it is very hard to get around the city and it is a pain for the people of Jakarta. Public transport is also affected by overcrowding because the current transport system is not sufficient and big enough to cater to all of the 10 million residents.
Because there are so many vehicles on the road, this means that there are lots of unhealthy gases being let off causing serious air pollution. This is a problem because air pollution can have very negative effects on humans and the environment. Jakarta is the third most polluted city in the world.
Over half of Jakarta’s population lives in slums. In these slums, there is poor sanitation, a lack of access to clean water, overcrowding and hunger. This is in my view is the biggest problem in Jakarta because many people in the slums are dying from disease and the quality of life there would be terrible.
In Indonesia, 67% of men smoke and less but still many women and even children do as well. Jakarta and Indonesia have had this problem for many years and it kills over 200,000 Indonesians a year. It is hard to get Indonesian people out of smoking because it is part of their culture and they do not want to let go of it.

This flood in Jakarta in 2007 proved disastrous as many people were killed and many were left homeless. Source - http://views-on-science.blogspot.com.au/2010/07/knowledge-life-continued-floods-in.html

Here we can see by the colour of the river water and the by the state of the houses that living conditions in the slums in Jakarta are absolutely terrible and solutions need to be found to help these people.

Solutions to these problems in Jakarta
Many ideas to find the solution of Jakarta’s flooding have
been raised. Some ideas include increasing drainage capacity in the city and
building lakes or ponds to collect all of the water. Another idea is to build
concrete walls on the river banks to stop the overflow of rivers.
The obvious answer to stopping traffic congestion would be to build more roads in the city, but many experts are pointing to other ideas. People are saying that to reduce traffic problems, you need to reduce business in the city. Indonesia is a big country, so why would you make one city the centre of government, trade, media etc. when you have a whole country. People have made comparisons to New York, saying how chaotic everything would be if the US government and trade and everything was all based in New York. Another less dramatic idea has been to improve public transport in Jakarta so that not as many people are on the roads causing traffic. This idea to improve public transport kills two birds with one stone as it helps with the problem of busy roads, and it also helps another problem mentioned about insufficient public transport.
One great initiative aimed to help Indonesian people in slums is the ‘neighbourhood alert’ program. This program has two parts to help improve sanitation in the slums. The first is three wheeled cart that comes through the slums that have a sludge storage tank, a pump and hoses that cleans out the pathways in the slums. The second part is a septic tank that goes around the slums that cleans the shelters.
As it has been stated, smoking is part of the Indonesian culture so it is hard to make drastic decisions around the topis of smoking. Many people though have suggested to bump up prices of tobacco so that people don't buy it as much, and to have better educated for smoking so that people know the effects before they take up smoking.
